| About Madison, GA |
|
Known as "the town Sherman refused to burn,"
Madison, Georgia, is one of the largest historic districts on the National Register.
This treasure of the antebellum South offers a look back in time to the
era of "King Cotton".
The 1885 Brady Inn Bed and Breakfast is an ideal home-base to experience the beauty and history of this region. Directly across from the Brady Inn is the former 1816 Saffold plantation home, one of the oldest houses in Madison, Georgia, whose quiet, shady streets lined with exquisite antebellum homes are perfect for long strolls. In addition to the homes, churches and parks, your visit should include a stop at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center. This 1895 Romanesque Revival building contains a museum of local history, art galleries with changing exhibits, and a unique auditorium for the performing arts. Don't miss Heritage Hall, a restored home of historical and architectural significance, and the Morgan County African-American Museum which preserves and promotes awareness of our Southern African-American heritage. The Surrounding Area Other attractions in Georgia's Lake Country include Hard Labor Creek State Park, with its 18 hole public golf course, swimming lake, and hiking trails and Lake Oconee, the second largest recreational lake in the state. These areas of natural beauty not only feature nature trails, but also offer opportunities for fishing, swimming, water-skiing, boating, golfing, biking, and horseback riding. Links
